OUR PARIS DREAM, WHICH CAME TRUE AFTER 35 YEARS

In 1964 Raj Kapur had produced his blockbuster romantic movie Sangam. It was a big hit and is considered a classic in India even today. Parts of this movie were shot in Europe. It also had very good cinematography. To my memory, it was the first Hindi movie shot those locations in Europe.  It had a short scene of a few minutes showing Raj Kapur and Vaijayanti Mala as a newlywed couple standing at second floor of the Eiffel Tower. This scene had become very popular during those days. Eiffel Tower became USP of the movie. All posters of this movie had a big picture of Eiffel Tower in the centre. Those were the days, when foreign travel was a very distant dream for us Indians and Eiffel Tower at Paris was nearly an impossible dream destination for most Indians.

At that time I was posted at Dhaulakuan, near Nahan in HP. We were also recently married when we saw this movie at a theatre in Ambala Cantt in the year 1964. As the movie progressed, the silver screen came alive wherein Raj Kapur and Vaijyanti Mala were spending some blissful moments at Eiffel Tower on their honey moon. This scene really fascinated us and planted the dream of being at this place sometime in our lives. Though it seemed very far fetched during that point of time, almost like the dream of legendary “Sheikh Chilli”.

Dream fulfilled after 35 years, myself and my wife Pushpa at the Eiffel Tower.

But as the years passed and life continued, things changed and with it our fortunes too. As they say, you have to dream before your dream comes true. So one fine day after thirty five years, finally the much awaited dream became a reality and both I and my wife Pushpa were at Paris in May, 1999. We took a stroll around the lawns and watched this majestic structure from below. After that we took the lift to go up and reach the point where those particular scenes in movie Sangam were filmed. VOILA!! Our dream of standing at the same point, where Raj Kapur and Vaijayanti Mala had stood and watched the sprawling view of The City of Paris with river Seine flowing through. Our special moments on the Eiffel Tower were captured in my video camera by a fellow traveller.  This was a moment of great excitement and joy for both of us. We were also full of gratitude and thanked the Lord for making our 35 year old dream come true.

I am posting here a picture of that dream moment. In fact it is not a camera photograph but a screen shot taken from the video made with my Sony Handycam. Therefore it is not so good but still serves the purpose of reliving us that great moment.

हिंदु देश में नहीं है दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा हिन्दू मंदिर

 मुख्य मंदिर  

दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा हिन्दू मंदिर हिंदुओं के देश  नें नहीं है बल्कि कम्बोडिया में है जो कि एक बौद्ध देश है।  यह केवल सबसे बड़ा मंदिर ही नहीं है, बल्कि विश्व का सबसे बड़ा धार्मिक स्मारक भी है. 

यह कम्बोडिया के अति प्राचीन शहर अंगकोर में स्थित है और अंगकोर वाट के नाम से जाना जाता है. वाट कम्बोडियाई भाषा में मंदिर को कहते हैं. वास्तव में यह एक विष्णु को समर्पित मंदिरों का एक बहुत बड़ा समूह है जो जो सैकड़ों वर्ग किलोमीटर के क्षेत्र में फैला है. अंगकोर पुराने समय में कम्बोडिया की राजधानी हुआ करता था और उस समय इसे यशोधरपुर कहा जाता था. अब यह शहर ना के बराबर है. अब यहाँ से छः किलोमीटर दूर सियेमरीप नामक शहर है और मंदिर देखने जाने के लिए सियेम रीप जाना पड़ता है. सियेम रीप छोटा, पर सभी सुविधा संपन्न शहर है. यहाँ सारी दुनिया से पर्यटक आते हैं. असल में पर्यटन ही इस शहर का मुख्य व्यवसाय है.

एक बहुत अच्छी बात जो मैंने यहाँ देखी वो यह थी कि यहाँ दुनिया के अन्य टूरिस्ट शहरों वाली लूट खसोट नहीं है. लोग बहुत भले हैं और यह जगह भारत से भी सस्ती है.

                               इस मंदिर का निर्माण सूर्य वर्मा द्वितीय (1049 – 66) ने शुरू कराया था.

यह मंदिर वास्तु कला का एक आश्चर्य है. इसके चारों ओर एक गहरी खाई है जिसकी लंबाई ढाई मील और चौड़ाई 650 फुट है। खाई पर पश्चिम की ओर एक पत्थर का पुल है। मंदिर के पश्चिमी द्वार के समीप से पहली वीथि तक बना हुआ मार्ग 1560 फुट लंबा है और भूमितल से सात फुट ऊंचा है। पहली वीथि पूर्व से पश्चिम 800 फुट और उत्तर से दक्षिण 675 फुट लंबी है। मंदिर के मध्यवर्ती शिखर की ऊंचाई भूमितल से 210 फुट से भी अधिक है। अंकोरवाट की भव्यता तो उल्लेखनीय है ही, इसके शिल्प की सूक्ष्म विदग्धता, नक्शे की सममिति, यथार्थ अनुपात तथा सुंदर अलंकृत मूर्तिकारी भी उत्कृष्ट कला की दृष्टि से कम प्रशंसनीय नहीं है।

हालांकि बहुत से मंदिर अब खंडहरों में बदल गए हैं पर फिर ये भी बहुत ही शानदार हैं. एक मंदिर के जीर्णोद्धार का काम भारतीय पुरातत्त्व विभाग की सहायता से हो रहा था.

एक मंदिर में बना विशालकाय मानव सिर - ऐसे मानव सिर इन मंदिरों की विशेषता है.

यह सचमुच ही बहुत दर्शनीय स्थान है और मेरी राय में अगर हो सके तो इसे अवश्य देखना चाहिए.

AGE IS NOT JUST A NUMBER – MY THOUGHTS AFTER TURNING 81 TODAY

It is often said that “age is just a number” and therefore one should not bother when this number increases.

It is not a correct statement. Age is not a just a number but a reality. It does weaken your body and brings down its capacities as this number goes up. You cannot remain in youthful state by just keep on imagining that you are the person and have not changed.

This hostel has now been made a girls hostel. It was the first hostel which had

come up at PAU  and we were the first group of students to move into it.

I turned 81 today. Therefore I am trying to revaluate myself. The past one year has brought a big change in my physical capabilities. My gait has changed many times I am not able to balance myself, especially when I am out of my home compound. Therefore I need to use a walking stick. I have to take an auto for going to market or to friends’ places. This is resulting in reduction in my contact with outside world. Most of my socialization now is through Face Book  only. I do miss sitting and having a drink with friends. I also miss my favourite jalebi, gulab jamuns and non-vegetarian food items which my doctors have asked me stop completely. Another unwelcome change is that feeling of discomfort during sleep at night after I take a drink. Though this does not happen every time, but does happen in fifty per cent cases. I just cannot stand a second drink.

The positive side of the reduced outdoor activity, however, is that now I have more time for devoting to my favourite pursuit, writing. So during most of my time now, I am in my study.

I am also developing a feeling now that is has been enough and therefore will not be bad to retire from this world. As with more age related body problems, life in coming years may not be easy. I am also reminded about Mitch Aboms international best seller, “Tuesdays with Morie”, which has an account of the last days of a helpless professor.

लॉकडाउन में बाल कटवाए तो याद आ गया स्वीडन

बाल बनवाए तीन महीने हो चले थे। इन बढ़े बालों ने सूरत तो बिगाड़ ही दी थी पर अब असुविधा भी मैसूस होने लग गई थी। ऐसे में सोचा क्यों न पड़ोस में रहने वाले नाई, जिसकी दुकान और बिजनेस लौकडाउन  के कारण बंद था, को पूछा जाय कि क्या वह सहायता कर सकेगा और घर में आकर बाल काट जाएगा? वह तुरंत मान गया, पर साथ धीरे  से यह भी बोला कि सौ रुपए होंगे (यहाँ मेरे शहर में बाल काटने का आम रेट चालीस रुपये  है)। मैंने हाँ करदी और उसको बुला लिया। मैं घर के बाहर कुर्सी पर बैठ गया। सावधानी के तौर पर मैंने उसे केवल अपनी कैंची ही लाने को कहा जो मैंने उपयोग से पहले सैनिटाइज़ कर ली। बाकी तौलिया आदि मैंने अपना ही दिया। लगता है कि इस मंदी के वक्त में उसको भी काम की जरूरत थी। उसने बड़ी तबीयत से मेरे बाल काटे। भारत में बाल कटवाने के मैंने अपने जीवन में ये सबसे ज्यादा पैसे दिये थे। मेरी उम्र 81 वर्ष है और मैंने दो आने से बाल कटवाने शूरु किए थे।

            इस बात ने मुझे और मेरी पत्नी को 32 साल पहले के हमारे स्वीडन प्रवास के दिन याद दिला दिये। तब हम साउथ स्वीडन शहर कृहनस्टाड की एक देहाती उपबस्ती बाल्सगार्ड में रहते थे जो कृहनस्टाड 11 किलोमीटर थी। बाल्सगार्ड में कोई भी बाज़ार आदि नहीं था और सभी सुविधाओं के लिए हमें कृहनस्टाड जाना पड़ता था। हम यूनिवर्सिटी के गैस्ट हाउस में रहते थे। हमारे साथ के सैट में एक चीनी विद्यार्थी युवक रह रहा था। वह हमसे चार महीने पहले वहाँ आया था और कुछ दिनों में वापिस जाने वाला था।

            यह हमारी पहली विदेश यात्रा नहीं थी। मुझे इस बात का एहसास था का विदेशों में बाल कटवाना काफी महंगा होता है। इसलिए मैंने चलने से पहले सोलन में, जहां मैं उस समय कार्यरत था, बाल कटवा लिए थे।

            जब स्वीडन में बाल कटवाने लायक हो गए, तो मैंने अपने स्वीडिश साथियों से पूछा कि मैं बाल कहाँ कटवाऊँ। पर जब मैंने रेट सुना तो मेरे होश तो उड  गए। वहाँ पुरुषों की बालकटाई का रेट कम से कम चार सौ रुपये था। उस समय सोलन में इस काम में पाँच रुपये से अधिक नहीं लगा करते थे। पर स्वीडन में तो यह रेट दो हज़ार रुपये तक था।

            स्वीडन में एक नाई की दुकान 

              हमारा पड़ोसी चीनी युवक वांग हमारी हैरानी ताड़ गया था। उसने हंस कर मेरी पत्नी को सलाह दी कि इतना पैसा बर्बाद करने के बजाय वो मेरे बाल खुद ही काट लिया करे। उसने फिर कहा कि उसे बाल कटाई के महंगे रेटों बारे में चीन से चलने के पहले चीन में उसके अनुभवी चीनी मित्रों ने सावधान कर दिया था और इसलिए वो वहाँ से बाल काटने की मशीन और कैंची लेकर आया है और हम इनका  उपयोग करके ये खर्च बचा सकते हैं। हमें भी उसकी बात में बुद्धिमानी नज़र आई और फिर जब तक हम वहाँ रहे, मेरी पत्नी ही मेरे बाल काटती रही। चीनी युवक शीघ्र ही वापिस चला गया। जाते हुए ये दोनो चीज़ें वह हमें भेंट कर गया। वहाँ से वापिस आते हुए हम इन्हें अपने साथ भारत भी ले आए। कैंची तो साधारण थी पर वह मशीन बहुत ही उत्तम क्वालिटी की थी और बाल बहुत अच्छी तरह, बिना बाल उखाड़े, काटती थी। बाद में मैंने ये दोनों चीज़ें यहाँ अपने नाई को दे दी थी।

बाल्सगार्ड में मेरे एक सहयोगी के परिवार संग पुष्पा 

            यहाँ मैं पाठकों को एक बात समझाना चाहता हूँ कि उन दिनों जब भी किसी भारतीय को विदेश में काम करने का अवसर मिलता था, तो उसका मुख्य ध्येय वहाँ अधिक से अधिक बचत करके पैसा या विदेशी सामान, जो भारत में उन दिनों दुर्लभ हुआ करता था, लाना हुआ था। इसलिए सभी ज्यादा से ज्यादा पैसा बचाने की कोशिश में रहा करते थे। सोलन में उस समय मेरी  तनख्वाह कोई 6-7 हज़ार के आस पास रही होगी। इससे आप अंदाज़ा लगा सकते हैं कि बाल कटाने के 400 रुपये मुझे कितने अधिक लगे होंगे। आप यह भी अंदाज़ा लगा सकते हैं कि उस चीनी युवक की दी हुई वह कैंची और मशीन तथा मेरी पत्नी पुष्पा की बाल काटने की स्किल(?) हमारे लिए कितनी उपयोगी सिद्ध हुई होगी।

            यहाँ यह बताना भी प्रासंगिक रहेगा कि स्वीडन में हैयर ड्रेस्सिंग की वहाँ की आईटीआई किस्म के संस्थानों में विशेष ट्रेनिंग हुआ करती थी। हमारे यहाँ की तरह कोई भी युवक/युवती किसी उस्ताद से बाल काटना सीख कर नाई का काम नहीं कर सकता था। कम से कम अवधि का कोर्स एक साल का था और इस कोर्स की बहुत मांग थी। हमें हमारी पड़ोसन ने बताया कि स्वीडन में एमबीबीएस जैसे कोर्स के लिए इतने आवेदक नहीं होते जितने कि हैयर ड्रेस्सर के कोर्स में दाखिला लेने के लिए होते हैं क्यों कि यह वहाँ यह बहुत ही कमाई वाला व्यवसाय था।
